📖 About Diamond Beach

Diamond beach (T 142) is located on the north side of an active tombolo that heads out to, and occasionally attaches to Diamond Island (Fig. 4.25). When attached the beach is 500 m long and faces due north. When detached it is still connected by a shallow sand bar. It receives waves averaging less than 1 m which usually maintain a low gradient beach and continuous attached bar, with some low rock outcrops scattered along the beach. The beach is backed by a strip of trees then cleared slopes containing a youth hostel, the Diamond Island Resort and private land and is best accessed from adjoining Redbill Beach. There is a penguin colony in lee of the sand spit and on the rounded Diamond Island, which is also a 5 ha nature reserve.
